Managing Little League (Little League Baseball Guides)

Learn how to manage your youth team to success. With its "teach basics and have fun" approach, Managing Little League Baseball is dedicated to helping you teach baseball fundamentals to boys and girls while emphasizing how to make the experience rewarding for you and your players. Fully approved by Little League Baseball and illustrated with instructive photos and diagrams, this book will give you the tools you need to develop prepared ballplayers. Inside you'll learn:

  • Twenty of the most important and frequently used Little League baseball rules, including the latest change and the new rules regarding pitchers.
  • The fundamentals of hitting, baserunning, defense, and pitching.
  • Tips on motivating players, game strategy, and special challenges such as competitive pressure and demanding parents.
  • An inside look at Little League softball.
  • Late on the night of his youngest son's final Little League game, Ned McIntosh found he couldn't sleep. He realized that he'd never again coach one of his children, and he began wondering whether his coaching system, developed over 15 years of coaching (and three sons), would be of use to other parent/coaches. Three years later, Managing Little League Baseball was born. From start to finish, McIntosh stresses the need to make baseball fun for the players, all the while developing the skills players need to win. From choosing players (use your returning players as scouts) to making sure they all play (a Little League rule) to designing effective practices, McIntosh outlines the techniques that have made his teams successful--for 15 straight winning seasons. Chapters outline drills for hitting, base running, defense, and pitching, while a special section focuses on handling overbearing parents. This otherwise fine book is flawed by too few illustrations (a problem remedied by McIntosh's later book, Little League Drills and Strategies), but Managing Little League Baseball is a great resource for coaches old and new. --Sunny DelaneyLearn how to manage your youth team to success. The Worst Journey in the World

Cherry-Garrard, who accompanied Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic on the explorer's doomed quest for the South Pole, recounts the unforgettable journey across forbidding, inhospitable terrain. He was also a member of the search party that ultimately discovered Scott's frozen body along with his last notebook entries. With an introduction by the author, this tale of adventure stands out as a literary accomplishment as well as a classic of exploration.
As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise.

Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore.... If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg."

Hiking into the remote Utah canyonlands, Aron Ralston felt perfectly at home in the beauty of the natural world. Pujols: More Than the Game

After a decade starring for the St. Louis Cardinals, Albert Pujols is already compared with names in the highest reaches of baseball's pantheon: Ruth, Gehrig, Aaron, Mays.

Authors Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth spare no tale of this growing baseball legend, all the while accentuating "the unseen hand of divine providence" that has shaped the man Albert Pujols has become.

From the foreword by Joe Posnanski, Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated:
How does Pujols find ways to keep getting better? Some of the secrets are in this fine book by Lamb and Ellsworth.

Mike Huckabee, 44th Governor of Arkansas:
One thing about Pujols--he matches in his personal life the excellence that he demonstrates on the diamond. You will love this book and will love Pujols if you don't already. You may never love the Cards like I do, but there's hope for you!

Tommy Herr, St. Louis Cardinals' 2nd baseman, 1979-1988:
As a part of the great tradition of St. Louis Cardinals baseball, it is very gratifying to me to see a man of Albert's character enjoy the success that he has achieved. His dedication to his craft and to God makes him the ultimate Hall of Famer.

Derrick Goold, baseball writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Lamb and Ellsworth peek behind the box scores, scrape beneath the statistics, and illuminate not just what drives Pujols in the batter's box, but what inspires him beyond it.

Frank Pastore, former pitcher for Reds and Twins: Ellsworth and Lamb do a great job exposing the wonderful man beneath the uniform. Even if you're not a baseball fan, you can't help but fall in love with this quality guy.

Marvin Olasky, Editor-in-chief, World: ...lucidly describes both the season-by-season baseball exploits of Pujols and the impact he's having on some lives for eternity.

FLAME, hip-hop artist: You will walk away from this book encouraged in your faith as you read of Pujols' steadfast commitment to God in the midst of obstacles.

Les Steckel, veteran NFL coach and Pres./CEO, Fellowship of Christian Athletes: ... delivers a home run in this fascinating and well-documented story of a young boy who began playing baseball using milk cartons for baseball gloves and now uses his platform as baseball's greatest player to proclaim the joy and strength he receives in walking with the Lord.
